Hi,

We have made our way to Goreme, Cappadoccia in the Anatolian part of Turkey. Now that we’ve left Istanbul we are no longer in Europe but in Asia. That’s right, Turkey is a tale of two continents.

These fascinating yet strange and natural rock formations create Goreme, making it a surreal looking village. The rocky Goreme valley looks like it’s covered with snow but it isn’t, the white layer is simply natural rock erosion. Cappaddocia as a whole is a volcanic area with ancient geological formations creating it’s one of a kind rocky, pointy and honey colored look.

In other words, years ago Mount Hasan & Mount Melendiz spewed out volcanic ash for miles and covered the town like a blanket. Adding rain and wind to the mix, together they created this extraordinary scenery. Cappadocia is nature’s beautiful creation.

Later on, humans started carving the rock to create storerooms, caves, churches, mosques and even underground cities. Still today, hotels and houses are in the rocks.

Until next time,

Evelina

  1. I love your pictures! It’s so, I don’t know, refreshing? – to see photos that just look like exactly where a person is and not like they came straight from a magazine. It’s so much more authentic!

    1. Cool! Glad you think this post was worth sharing with others. Thank you for complimenting my photos. I tried my best to capture the essence of this unique place. I’m sure many are unaware of this place, I didn’t even know about before my time in Turkey. Good thing for tourists attractions brochures.

  3. Foundation of this village laid down by nature… So beautiful.. Does this village have trees n shrubs… Or does the volcanic Ash not allow them to grow

    1. I agree, a very uniquely beautiful village. That is a good question. I am no expert but in my pictures I see trees where there is land not on the ash. I assume the ash and the rock formations would get in the way of growth but who knows maybe nature can go around it.
